Is Religion Really for the Poor masses. Religion could be defined as a belief or any activity of worship of a supernatural being. Religion, also, has become some people’s way of life.
In the world we live in today, religion has caused more harm than good because we have refused to be tolerant.
Given this intolerance, is not farfetched why we have religious strife in our society today.
Nigeria is comprised of people who practice diverse religions that include Christianity, Islam, and Traditional religion.
Although only the first two are more widely practiced in Nigeria and most parts of Africa.
Religion has been a source of controversy since its inception in Nigeria; every part holds their religion in high esteem and would not tolerate it being talked down at, and this is where our problem started from, where you find men fighting for God, against there follow human
This has divided us more, than uniting us as a nation. Imagine humans fighting for God by killing their fellow humans, most times is unimaginable what a crisis has befallen us all in the name of religious practices
Other problems could be ethnicity and politics. While religion is supposed to bring us unity, brings us closer as one, in love and giving, it rather destroys us as a nation.
People of the same ethnicity become different rather than similar, and it sort of brings a gap between them. favors are given on the basis of who is practicing what religion rather than merit.
That is not the topic of discussion in this article, however. The topic of discussion is to examine and see whether religion is a tool to keep the poor people on the social ladder where they currently are.
Religion, originally, is not supposed to be a poor people’s thing in the first place but it appears that they are the most loyal patronizers of it as they even go as far as hating and killing each other while the elites practice these religions in moderation.
Somewhere, in the northern part of Nigeria, there are law enforcement agencies that are put in place to check the excesses of offenders or blasphemers.
These agencies go about to arrest persons whom they perceive to be offenders or have broken religious laws, and in some way, it has suppressed the freedom of expression of the people living there
Whether or not they are practicing the same religion.
A few days ago, at Yusuf Buhari, son of the president of Nigeria’s wedding, it could be seen that the rules guiding his religion did not apply to him and his fellow elites as they are seen partying and enjoying music from the south
A Musci by Naira Maria whom they have banned never to be played among them or be arrested, but here they are the elite playing such music, jumping up and down in amusement, yet no arrested was made among them the elite
They are that ban the music months ago, the poor are not allowed to play or dance to such music, the poor whom they usually accuse of embracing too much of the white man’s culture
Something different from their regional music, and something the regional police could have gotten them arrested for if they were average or poor citizens playing and dancing such music
The northerners are quick to label any act that does not conform to their prevalent religion as blasphemy or an offense, but their actions are getting clearer as to who their main targets are; the poor.
But the rich go about their daily lives abiding by little or no rules of their various religions. Some of them attend nightclubs and parties all night
Some of them move around with women to whom they are not lawfully married. The poor people, on the other hand, are the ones who are fervent in prayer and stand to defend their religions as though their lives depended on them
Even if it means going out of their ways to do things they’d rather not do on ordinary days, in some rare cases, even to kill someone whom they believe is against their religion or has committed blasphemy.
This is seen in the actions and activities of the deadly Boko-Haram sect who have been ravaging the north for over a decade now.
In the case of this sect, we could say narcissism is in play; as they believe and think that no other religion is superior to theirs, or no one should practice any other religion aside from theirs.
But although they still kill people who practice the same faith like theirs, so it is complicated what they really want or are agitating for.
Religion is used to deceive some people to not take a bold step in the betterment of their own life, on the basis that the holy books kick against greed or not being satisfied and that God would give them what is theirs.
While this may be true, it has made some poor people remain
in the condition, they are, not taking any practical steps to improve their standard of living and hoping that a god would provide them with anything they need by praying hard.
The poor are easily deceived and always tend to believe anything, as long as you tell them it is what religion demands or asks them to do
While the rich are known to break all protocols and explore.
While it is okay to practice any religion of one’s preference, it is advisable to balance this religion with everyday social life and never be on the extremist side where you could hurt your neighbor because of a perceived blasphemy.
We should develop the attitude of tolerating our neighbors regardless of whether their religious views are different from ours.
The moment we decide to look past whatever religion our neighbors practice and embrace tolerance, love, and peace, that’s the moment we would realize that we are stronger together and that our common enemy is not ourselves
Our common enemies are those who want us to stand against each other, using religion, politics, and tribalism to sow a seed of hatred in us.
