Mental Blinkers, By Harnie Gold

I first heard the word “mental blinkers” in the 2018 Jamaican film “sprinter”. I collected it from a friend, who said the film was very interesting.
It was an interesting and educating film though I had to fast forward some scenes and I must say, I hate films that contains scenes that I must fast forward but I had to get to the end of this film because I was curious to see whether Akeem the protagonist (main character) will overcome his distraction to win the championship.
It was Akeem after ran the fastest 200m in the world that year in the film that Coach used the world’s mental blinkers. Akeem was getting a little distracted because of his recent achievement whereas there was a bigger race ahead of him.
The word blinker(s) means leather sidepieces attached to a horse bridle to prevent sideway vision. Blinkers help a horse to focus its attention ahead by not allowing it to get distracted by things sideways. Everyone in pursuit of a vision needs blinkers. Though not in the same way as a horse but rather in our minds.
Mental blinkers help us to focus ahead and shade us from distractions coming from different directions. It is not only our eyes that are capable of being distracted, even our minds can be.
Distractions take our mind away from what we are supposed to focus our effort, energy, time, resources, etc on things that seem important yet very unimportant. Some of the areas in our lives that need blinkers include but not limited to:
*Past and immediate success: sometimes,
Our past success could be what is distracting us from the vision and success ahead and in most cases, our immediate success can make us forget the greater success ahead of us
Life being for a living is ok for one to achieve his or her goal, but not ok to stay in a comfort zone and been carried away by the past of an immediate success you have achieved
You must strive for more, set a new target for there is never a greater success, yes all success is great but none is greater as long as one is still breathing there will be more task ahead to strive for
Some people celebrate a win for too long. Very win must be celebrated. But like in football, after the celebration, the game continues that even at the end of a football season a new season will open up, those that won the previous season will be working hard to retain their title
It is not over until it is over and that is still the referee’s final whistle. Don’t dwell for too long on a victory. Get up again because there are still more to conquer.
A champion today may not be a champion tomorrow if that win is allowed to become a distraction. Put a blinker on any success that makes you feel you have arrived when you know that there are more lands to conquer.
Amateurs are working hard every day to become champions and if you must maintain your title, you must keep your focus ahead, you must know when to put a blinker
Past failure if not checked, can be a huge distraction. It takes a strong focus to overcome the distractions that come with a failure. But, life is too short for us to allow what we did not get right to stop us from what we will get right.
You can put a mental blinker on that failure by constantly telling yourself that failure is not final. One interesting thing I must point out is this; both success and failure come with a lot of pressure, the difference is what we do with the pressure.

In “sprinter”, the interviewer said something about Akeem’s victory coming with a lot of pressure. Akeem’s reply was epic, he said and I quote,
“… it’s just what we do with the pressure.
My coach would say to me. You turn pressure into propulsion.” Turn the pressure of that failure into propulsion. Let it fuel you to try again. You don’t have to prove to the world that you are not a failure but you owe that to yourself. Don’t let anything distract you just keep the focus ahead.
Mockers sometimes we listen to the wrong voices for too long till it begins to make us move out of track. You don’t need to give a mocker your ear time because if you do, you will lose your focus.
The best you can do for mockers is to deny them your attention.
They have nothing to offer but they will only give you one thousand and one reasons why you can not succeed. Don’t allow their pressure. You must remain calm and focus ahead.
For anyone who wants to occupy a place at the top, there is a need to put on blinkers in our mind, because every failure and success begins in the mind and anything that cannot distract our minds can not affect our focus. Any battle lost in the mind has been lost on the outside. Our minds are important because it controls the outcomes of our life. Let nothing
