NYSC The end is near As Bill Seeking To Scrap NYSC reaches second reading in the house of Rep
By Harnie Gold
Is no longer news that numerous promising Nigerian graduates have lost their lives during their NYSC one-year mandatory service: this being the key point why the House of Representative lower chamber of Nigeria bicameral National Assembly is debating on scrapping NYSC program in the West Africa Nigeria
NYSC service year, being a period when fresh graduates answer the clarion call for serving their father’s land, a program design to foster unity across the multi-ethnicity in Nigeria
But slowly turning into a trap of death roll for many Nigerian graduates, who these days see the NYSC program as a waste of time, while some observations have been made to this and more people are now beginning to call on the Government to scrap the NYSC program
One such caller is Mr. Awaji-Inombek Dagomie Abiante, a house of representatives member, representing the Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro constituency in Rivers state Nigeria, who sponsored the alteration of the bill has said that the NYSC exercise is not safe for graduates, in his view the program has lost its glory and is no longer save for our youths
Abiante has pointed out the following as the reasons behind the decision to scrap the exercise: “Incessant killing of innocent corps members in some parts of the country due to banditry, religious extremism and ethnic violence; incessant kidnapping of innocent corps members across the country”.
“Public and private agencies/departments are no longer recruiting able and qualified Nigerian youths, thus relying heavily on the availability of corps members who are not being well remunerated and get discarded with impunity at the end of their service year without any hope of being gainfully employed.”
The exercise has some lapses which have fallen short of the purpose of its establishment and the purpose been for national integration. The NYSC exercise was established under Decree No. 24 of 1973 on May 22, 1973, under the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon. and as I speak to you now, the exercise has lost its purpose
