Speed and progress, By Harnie Gold

Most times, people confuse speed with progress but in reality, they are not the same.
Speed is simply the rate at which someone or an object moves while progress is a movement towards a better state, a forward move towards an improved level, going from better to best, or moving from a lower standard to a higher standard. Though speed and progress are often mistaken to mean the same thing, both are never the same.
Speed defines the rate of your movement while progress defines the quality of your movement. Can you say a criminal or a fraudster meeting millions or even billions is progressing? No, that’s not progress, no matter whatever reason you want to justify it.
Progress benefits the individual and the society but it never makes them prey.
Speed takes you ahead of your peers but progress is what helps you to continue staying ahead. If you make ten million annually, you own some luxury cars and have several liabilities but without any investment(s) as against a friend that makes two million annually has no car but has several investments no matter how little they may be, the latter is making progress.
To several people, the former is progressing more than the latter but in the real sense, the second guy is the one making progress.
Speed is not the most important thing, but making speedy progress is. Is very unfortunate how several people celebrate speed and not progress (or speedy progress).
Imagine a driver going to Abuja but is speeding in the direction of Lagos. Can he ever arrive in Abuja, despite how fast he drives? No. There are people out there speeding in the wrong direction.
They put so much effort into the wrong things and after so much speed yet no progress, they begin to blame people and spiritual forces for their plight.
Progress might be slow and frustrating at times but it will be forever better than speed in the wrong path. Life is about progress (or speedy progress) but never about speed.
You can put your life in the fast lane and at the end, you are left with nothing. Having so much money at your disposal is not the same as progress.
You can start a business and in less than two weeks make millions out of it but what can turn it into progress is the worthwhile things you were able to achieve with it.
Are you investing more to make the business better and stronger? Are you investing in worthwhile people? Are you investing in your well-being?
Focus on making speedy progress and not just on speed. Remember, no matter how fast you drive in the wrong direction it can never take you in the right direction.
