The chaotic situation in Libya has nothing good to write home about as the United States is now furious about the United Nations Security Council about the latest development on Libya, a country in North Africa
Who two days ago failed to reach an agreement to relocate the head of the Libya mission from Geneva in Switzerland to Tripoli in Libya to engage with the people on the ground rather than by phone, via zoom or virtually ahead of the December 24 election, in a situation where things are not going as expected
For those who may not remember what is going on in Libya and why the United States is involved there, let me through in some light by taking back to history
Back in those days, when Libya used to be ruled by a strong man called Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi who was overthrown during the revolution in 2011 and was assassinated on October 20, 2011, in Sirte, Libya.
Since then the country has been in a real mess and has not recovered yet. nor return to her glorious days, with no real government in charge things becomes more chaotic
It will interest you to know that in Lybia there are two main warring factions as of now. one being the Libyan National Army and the other happens to be the Government of National Accord.
Each of the factions has its international backers. That in August this year 2021, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres deed recommended that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) appoint a special representative based in Tripoli to engage better with various actors on the ground rather than by phone from Geneva
At first, things were proceeding as planned but not too well and at the moment, the UN’s top official on Libya is based in Geneva, Switzerland, are not yet on Lybia soil
At the UN meeting in New York on Thursday 30th September 2021, the Council agreed to extend the UN mission until the end of January but did not agree to have the head of mission on the ground right there in Tripoli, triggering outrage from the United States and the United Kingdom as well.
It is an unfortunate outcome, especially for the Libyan people. It is also an unfortunate outcome for the Security Council,” Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis, United States Senior Advisor for Special Political Affairs, said in remarks after the vote.
In his words
“Today we have failed to implement the recommendations from the Secretary-General’s Independent Strategic Review at a crucial time.
The Independent Strategic Review was clear – that the Head of Mission should be relocated to Tripoli, to increase engagement with Libyan actors and the Libya masses.
Considering the critical importance of UN support for December national elections, the recommendation from the review should be implemented now without any further delays
With just a few months down the road, the expected election.” things need to be done now and should be done faster in other to restore Lybia back to her glorious days
